St. Patrick’s Day: Don’t let your luck run out

March 10, 2020

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and it’s a day when people are sure to drink. Green beer has become a kind of symbol of this holiday, with restaurants and bars having the drink for only a short time.

You might be excited to head out and party with friends, but you need to consider the real dangers of going out on this party night. You could drink more than expected or even end up driving drunk if you’re not prepared. While St. Patrick’s Day is supposed to be fun, it’s only fun if you’re able to handle drinking and getting home safely.

St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, has a major downside, and it is that some people choose to drink and drive. In fact, this is one of the biggest drinking nights of the year, meaning that there are likely to be more people on the road who are intoxicated.

How common is it for people to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

This holiday is one of the most popular and one of the deadliest. Looking at data, it’s been shown that alcohol violations, DUIs and alcohol-related crashes spike the day of the holiday. It’s not a surprise considering that St. Patrick’s Day is designed as a day to party and drink.

There are around 32.3 million people in America who claim at least some Irish ancestry. Around 56.1% of American adults do plan to celebrate, which means that there is a good likelihood that people will become intoxicated and potentially choose to drive while drunk. Sadly, around three quarters of the fatal crashes that will take place during this holiday will involve a driver who is at least two times over the legal limit.

This holiday is the fourth most popular drinking day of the year, and though around 54% of people surveyed will choose beer, others will choose a combination of beer and hard liquor or hard liquor alone.

If you’ll be out on St. Patrick’s Day, celebrate safely

It’s important for you to celebrate this holiday as safely as possible. It’s meant to be fun, but it will be anything but if you end up arrested for drinking and driving.

Always set up a ride, so you can get home safely. If you plan to drink, consider having a sober ride take you to and from the bar or party you’re attending. This simple plan could help you avoid violating the law or getting into a crash.
